Failures , how to cope with them ? in the last 20 years I did many courses …restorative , surgery , soft tissues , guided bone regenerations , prosthetic…and also management , leadership , marketing courses BUT nobody never taught me this … a painful one , failure management …this is something nobody teach.
In the modern society success centered where we live nobody show failures . Everybody upload their best images on facebook instagram and other similar places…nothing less than perfection is acceptable nowadays.
So when you fail and your patient complains , he crashes your world , your certainties , your self esteem .
We build our certainties going to courses where everything is reliable and safe , where human laws outperform nature …just in time to go back to our offices and be again prey of reality .
Procedures are not perfect…
At the beginning I was thinking that the fault was always mine , something I didn’t know …I had to study more , do more courses …and it was partially true but after a while you stop improving and you have to face reality …medicine is not perfect .
You have to accept failures are sometimes not avoidable ….who has zero failures is a liar and a crook.
So I did my own statistics…the last 300 implants I placed , I ve been successful around 273 ….and this is not 100% .
The last 450 restorations I did , 445 were successful.. a great result but still not 100%
My last 90 wisdom teeth extractions , 88 were complications free….but 2 had complications …one neurological and one severe infection .
I find a comfort looking at the majority of the success I have but the reality is that even 95% success rate mean one disappointed patient every 20 , and for that patient numbers are void words. Failure in his case is a plain 100%.
I find a relief reading these words from Michael jordan : “ I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
I have not 100% success , I fail sometimes and i taste that bitter feeling …but the following morning I wake up , I put my uniform and you know what ? I do it again .
Because that’s what I learnt …it’s not about winning every time , it’s about falling down and rising every time the art we have to master .
